Twinless is a 2025 American black comedy psychological drama film written and directed by James Sweeney. Scheduled for release on September 5, 2025, the film explores identity, grief, and the fragile nature of friendship.
The story follows two young men, played by Dylan O’Brien and James Sweeney, who meet in a twin bereavement support group. Some of them are so bad that they threaten to destroy their friendship. Aisling Franciosi, Lauren Graham, Tasha Smith, Chris Perfetti, François Arnaud, Susan Park, and Cree Cicchino are also in the cast.
Where Was Twinless Filmed?
Production for Twinless took place primarily in Portland, Oregon, during the winter of 2024. Director James Sweeney shared that Portland offered the perfect mix of visual charm and practicality for the film. The movie’s personal and emotional tone fit well with the city’s unique neighbourhoods, lush landscapes, and small-town vibe.
When Sweeney visited Portland for the first time in 2017, he knew right away that it would be a great setting for his movie. A big part of the decision to shoot there was that it had skilled local crews and recently improved tax breaks for filming.
Filming in Portland, Oregon
Portland served as the heart of Twinless’s production. Many of the city’s tree-lined streets, residential neighborhoods, and local community centers were transformed into key locations for the story. While exact addresses were kept private, the cityscape itself is recognizable to anyone familiar with Oregon’s largest city.
One interesting challenge for the Twinless production team was recreating spring and summer settings during Portland’s cold winter months. To create the illusion of warmer seasons, crews brought in branches with artificial blooms to simulate spring. The cast had to wear light, summery clothing despite the chilly temperatures, and visible breaths were later removed digitally in post-production to maintain the seasonal look. Filming on location with these adjustments gave the movie a grounded and authentic feel, helping audiences connect more deeply with the characters’ journey through grief and self-discovery.
Behind the Scenes on Location
James Sweeney described filming in Portland as “dreamy” and highlighted the local crew’s enthusiasm. The director and his longtime cinematographer Greg (his college friend) chose to shoot on 35mm film, enhancing the natural textures of Portland’s landscapes.
Sweeney noted that the city not only complemented the narrative but also gave the team creative flexibility. From quiet neighborhood streets to intimate indoor spaces, Portland provided a versatile backdrop without the need for elaborate studio builds.
The production also took advantage of Oregon’s supportive film infrastructure, which continues to attract filmmakers seeking both financial incentives and cinematic scenery.
