Brendan Devane wrote and directed THE SOUND, a supernatural horror thriller. This movie stands out because it shows rock climbing in a real way, thanks to real climbers working on the cast and crew. The story is about a group of climbers who go to a cliff that has been off limits for a long time. Initially meant to be an adventurous ascent, the expedition quickly turns into a terrifying struggle for survival when the climbers encounter a malevolent force that lurks in the mountains. The film stars William Fichtner as Conner, Jocelyn Hudon as Dana Watkins, David Clennon as Kurt, Kyle Gass as Bill, Christina Kirkman as Emily, Jolene Kay as Kerrie, Alex Honnold as himself, and Christian Howard as Brad.
Now, let’s take a look at the beautiful places where The Sound was filmed.
WHERE WAS “THE SOUND” FILMED?
The main filming for “The Sound” took place in 2023 but extra scenes and post-production shooting continued into early 2024. Beautiful real-life rock climbing locations were used in the movie. The intense climbing scenes and supernatural horror parts were filmed in a number of important places across—the United States.
RED ROCK CANYON AND RAINBOW WALL – NEVADA
One of the standout filming sites for THE SOUND was the Rainbow Wall—located in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area near Las Vegas, Nevada. Rainbow Wall, which is known for its difficult big wall climbs and—colorful sandstone faces—was the perfect place for the movie’s main climbing scenes. The production team, which included professional climbers like—Alex Honnold, used the wall’s height and natural shapes to make climbing scenes that looked real and were beautiful to look at.
LAMOILLE CANYON – RUBY MOUNTAINS, NEVADA
Scouting and some filming also took place in Lamoille Canyon, nestled in the Ruby Mountains of northeastern Nevada. This glacier-carved valley is known for its—high mountains and secluded rock walls, which helped make key scenes in the movie feel even more spooky and alone.
MOUNT CHARLESTON, NEVADA
Mount Charleston, located near Las Vegas, also served as one of the filming sites. Its cooler temperatures and alpine scenery contrasted with the desert heat of Red Rock Canyon and Moab, giving the film’s setting more diversity and helping to showcase the team’s treacherous and shifting climbing environment.
MOAB, UTAH – BASE JUMPING AND FINAL SHOTS
Scenes were also shot in Moab, Utah, a well-known desert area famous for its huge rock formations and tourists who come to do extreme sports. A lot of the movie’s more dangerous climbing and BASE jumping scenes took place in Moab. The final shot of the film was notably completed in Moab and described as a “super memorable one” by the crew. Tandem BASE Moab, a company known for elite BASE jumping experiences, assisted with scenes involving high-risk stunts.
MAZAMA, WASHINGTON – SECOND UNIT SHOOTS
Another team shot in Mazama, Washington, which is close to the North Cascades. The rough terrain and high alpine climbing in this area are well known. In September 2023, cinematographers and climbing experts got important shots with doubles and wide aerial sequences—that gave the climbing scenes more depth and realism. Crew members like Cheyne and Sean shared photos from the shoot.
SKYWALKER RANCH – POST-PRODUCTION AND SOUND
Even though it wasn’t used for filming, Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, California—was important to the process of finishing the movie. This building is north of an—Francisco and is famous for its world-class sound design. It gives the supernatural parts of the movie more atmosphere and sound depth.
