The Old Guard 2 Filming Locations – Where Was The Sequel Shot?

-

Many people are looking forward to seeing The Old Guard 2, which is also known as La Vieja Guardia 2. It is the follow up to the hit Netflix movie The Old Guard (2012). With action-packed scenes and a story based on the comic book series by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez, this fantasy thriller continues the story of Andy and her team of immortal warriors as they face a new threat that could end their legacy.

The movie will premiere on Netflix on July 2, 2025. Charlize Theron will play Andy, KiKi Layne will play Nile, Marwan Kenzari will play Joe, Luca Marinelli will play Nicky, Matthias Schoenaerts will play Booker, Chiwetel Ejiofor will play Copley—and Uma Thurman will play Discord.

WHEN AND WHERE WAS THE OLD GUARD 2 FILMED?

The Old Guard 2’s main filming began in June 2022 and was done by September 2022. An unexpected problem came up—during production in August 2022: a fire broke out on set while it was being taken apart, which caused a short delay. Despite the setback, filming resumed and eventually concluded.

The movie was shot in many places around the world, including Italy’s dramatic architecture, studio sets, and beautiful landscapes. It was also filmed in the UK and Canada. Here is a list of the confirmed filming locations:

ITALY – A MAJOR HUB FOR FILMING

Italy was the main setting for many of the movie’s important scenes because it was where most of the film’s main filming took place.

Rome, Italy

The capital of Italy was one of the main places where the movie was shot. When actor Henry Golding joined the sequel, he posted pictures from Rome on social media, which proved that the city was involved. The old buildings and cobblestone streets of Rome make a dramatic and timeless setting that is perfect for the story’s immortal characters.

Trieste, Italy

Some scenes were also filmed in Trieste, a port city in the northeastern part of Italy. Its beautiful Austro-Hungarian architecture and views of the coast make the setting more interesting.

Riva di Solto, Bergamo

This picturesque village in Lombardy, nestled beside Lake Iseo, was another Italian location used in the film. With its peaceful views of the lake—Riva di Solto adds a different kind of calm to the story.

Cernobbio

The movie was also shot in Cernobbio—a small town on Lake Como. The area, which is known for its fancy villas and lakeside walks, gives the movie a high-class look.

Cinecittà Studios, Rome

Some of the movie was shot at the famous Cinecittà Studios in Italy. Many famous movies have been shot at these studios, and for The Old Guard 2, they provided the controlled environment needed for scenes with a lot of action and VFX.

UNITED KINGDOM – EARLY PRODUCTION PHASE

Before shifting to Vancouver for reshoots, the UK was one of the initial filming locations. While specific spots have not been publicly detailed, the UK’s inclusion reflects the franchise’s continued European footprint. Given the first film’s use of historical and urban settings in Europe, it’s likely similar environments were selected for the sequel.

FRANCE – AERIAL FOOTAGE OF PARIS

There are shots of Paris in the trailer, especially of the Arc de Triomphe. It’s not clear, though, whether this footage was shot on location or from a stock library. There’s no official word that the cast is filming in France, but the city’s inclusion in the story adds a visual flair to the global setting.

VANCOUVER, CANADA – ADDITIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY

From October 7 to October 18, 2024, the production moved to Vancouver, British Columbia for additional photography. These reshoots, often called “pickups,” are used to improve certain scenes or add new material based on narrative needs or early feedback.

Holy Rosary Cathedral, Vancouver

The beautiful Holy Rosary Cathedral in downtown Vancouver was one of the confirmed places to film in Vancouver. For both inside and outside scenes, this Gothic Revival church made a striking backdrop.

Victoria Mahoney returned to oversee the additional photography, ensuring visual continuity with the original shoot. The scenes shot in Vancouver were probably used to add action, develop characters, or flesh out side stories that made the main story better.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES AND POST-PRODUCTION DELAYS

During post-production in July 2024, Charlize Theron revealed that work on the film had temporarily halted due to executive changes at Netflix. Fortunately, the project has since resumed and is now officially completed, ready for its summer 2025 debut.

Matthew Schmidt, who edited the movie and is known for working on big hit movies, helped put together scenes from all these different places into a smooth and interesting story.
