Where Was The Girlfriend Filmed?

Filming of The Girlfriend took place across London, England, and Málaga Province, Spain. Production started in June 2024 in London before moving to Andalucía in Spain for coastal and luxury estate settings. Locations include St. Ermin’s Hotel, St John’s Wood in London, and Spanish sites such as Cortijo San Francisco, Málaga Port, Marbella, Ronda, and the stunning Cueva del Gato.

London, England, UK

Filming began in June 2024 in London, the site of most of the films in the UK. The combination of London’s beautiful skyscrapers and elegant business districts was ideal for the family and business drama within the show. The major case for the production from Imaginarium Productions and Amazon MGM Studios for Prime Video was the abundance of crews and infrastructure available within the Tower.

St. Ermin’s Hotel
  • Westminster’s St. Ermin’s Hotel: The inclusion of the Westminster St. Ermin’s Hotel, a historic and luxurious St. Ermin’s Hotel from the period, accentuated elegance in the show. St. Ermin’s is famous for Victorian-style historic hotels, like the grand Baroque St. Ermin’s with the staircase and the ceilings richly sculptured in plaster. It also has a pretty courtyard garden. The production was able to take advantage of the vibrant atmosphere of central London due to the proximity of many prominent sites, like Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace.

Fun Fact: St. Ermin’s Hotel has appeared in films such as The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965) and TV series like Killing Eve.

59 Marlborough Place, St. John’s Wood, London
  • 59 Marlborough Place, St. John’s Wood, London: The property’s characteristic charm was appealing, not to mention the atmosphere of the considerably treed St. John’s Wood with its soft, tranquil beauty. The semi-detached house is at the end of a no-through road, surrounded by Hamilton Terrace and Grove End Road. They all offer a profusion of lush and well-groomed gardens. The series’ portrayal of Laura and her snowy lifestyle perfectly matched the property’s architectural splendour, which is enhanced by its strategic cultural and historical significance.

Fun Fact: St. John’s Wood has attracted its fair share of filmmakers. Streets and large houses have been used in Eyes Wide Shut (1999) and Paddington (2014) to create a version of London.

Málaga Province in Spain

Cortijo San Francisco

The production moved to the province of Málaga in Spain’s Andalucía region in October 2024. The team filmed in a lot of different places, such as Málaga Port, Marbella, Ronda, and the fancy Cortijo San Francisco. Two of the six episodes were filmed entirely in this sunny area, which has a lot of different types of landscapes.

This beautiful estate near Estepona on the Costa del Sol served as both a luxurious resort and a filming location for the series. Architect Manuel Camisuli Andaluz built it for Hollywood actor Stewart Granger in 1973. It is located in a semi-tropical forest in the New Golden Mile area. It was perfect for scenes that needed a glamorous, high-stakes setting because of its lavish design.

Trivia: The Costa del Sol has hosted shows like The Crown and Snatch (TV series) because of its mix of modern luxury and natural beauty.

Cueva del Gato
  • Cueva del Gato, or Cat’s Cave, in Benaoján, Andalucía: This natural monument was in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park near Ronda and made for a dramatic setting. The cave is part of a 10-kilometer speleological system and has a cat-shaped entrance. It provides a unique, rough setting for the thriller’s most intense scenes.
    • Trivia: The Sierra de Grazalema has been used in Spanish films like Carmen (2003).
Málaga Port (Cruise Terminal)
  • Málaga Port (Cruise Terminal), Málaga, Andalucía: The Málaga cruise terminal was turned into an airport for an important scene. In October 2024, local news outlets reported seeing Robin Wright directing and Olivia Cooke filming, along with dozens of extras and technical trucks. The terminal’s sleek, glassy halls made it look like a busy transit hub.
    • Trivia: The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017) is one of the films that used Málaga Port. Its sleek design looks like that of international airports or high-tech buildings.
  • Marbella, Málaga Province: The series took place in Marbella, which is known for its upscale homes and marinas along the coast. The city’s modern buildings and views of the water fit the show’s need for fancy exteriors without having to build many sets.
    • Trivia: Marbella is a popular place for shows like The Night Manager and Marbella (Netflix) because of its fancy resorts and Mediterranean charm.
  • Ronda, Málaga Province: Ronda’s historic stone streets and steep cliffs, which are inland from the coast, added depth to the production. Its small, real-life settings let the team film short scenes without having to dress up the sets too much.
    • Trivia: Ronda’s famous deep gorges and old town have been in films like The Three Musketeers (1993) and documentaries that show off Spain’s historic beauty?

Cast Details

The Girlfriend Behind The Scenes

Filming took place from late May to September 2024. It started in London and moved to Spain for the sunny, tense scenes. Robin Wright not only stars as Laura but also directs and executive produces. She jumped in during COVID when Imaginarium Productions approached her to direct.

According to elle.com, after reading the pilot, she said, “I read the pilot, and I could see the show just from that one episode.” When casting, Laura got tight on time; Wright took the role herself, calling it a great fit in the end.

In an interview with The Guardian, she revealed that the show doesn’t hesitate to challenge established norms: “We had to up the ante and have the mother kiss the son, which is so fucked up, so weird. And yet, it happens.”

On the creative front, Wright describes the tension between Laura and Cherry as deeply textured. Referencing their shared alpha energy and twisted bond, she said, “In another world, my character and Olivia’s would have been BFFs … one who just happens to be my character’s son. It’s twisted.”

Olivia Cooke, who plays Cherry, was Wright’s top pick after her roles in Thoroughbreds and Slow Horses. Wright praised Cooke’s “toughness that she has embedded in her.” Cooke felt she had to fight for the part, saying, “I thought that I was having to beg, borrow, and steal that part.” She loved Cherry’s bold side: “There was something that was so ballsy and confident about Cherry that I just really wanted to play.”

Author Michelle Frances, whose 2018 novel inspired the series, started writing it around 2015. She drew from real-life ideas, explaining, I was toying with the idea of this thriller about these interlocking two women fighting over this guy, and it’s such a universal problem. Her own experiences as a protective mom and thoughts on class differences shaped the story. She added, When I was much younger, I remember just wanting to try and change where I came from socially.”

One big challenge was the dual perspectives—showing events from Laura’s and Cherry’s views. Laurie Davidson, as Daniel, adjusted his acting based on that, noting, “Through one lens, you see it as this beautiful thing.” Wright found directing while acting tough, like “looking out of two sides of your brain at the same time.” Cooke was impressed, recalling Wright nailing an emotionascene andne then switching to director mode right away.

The team explored themes beyond rivalry, like wealth gaps and privilege. Cooke, from Manchester, said classism feels “innate” in the UK, and the show hits on that globally. Wright hopes viewers get hooked, saying, “I’m hoping that they get hooked, and they’re like, I can’t wait to go to episode 2.” With such dedication, this series feels real and raw.
