Netflix has started making its new limited series THE ALTRUISTS. The show is about the rise and fall of FTX, the now-defunct bitcoin exchange that caused a lot of trouble in the financial world. In Vancouver, British Columbia, filming started on July 1, 2025, and will go on until November 24, 2025.
The drama is based on real-life figures Sam Bankman-Fried, portrayed by Anthony Boyle (known for Masters of the Air), and Caroline Ellison, played by Julia Garner, best known for her Emmy-winning role in Ozark. The two were not only business partners but also romantically involved. Their dynamic is at the heart of the show, which portrays them as a modern-day, tech-fueled version of Bonnie and Clyde.
THE ALTRUISTS tells the story of how these two young, brilliant minds—full of idealism and ambition—set out to revolutionize global finance with cryptocurrency. But what started as a vision for change quickly spiraled into one of the biggest financial scandals in recent memory. Together, they allegedly moved and misused $36 billion, blurring the lines between business, trust, and betrayal.
The series comes from Higher Ground Productions, the company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama, in collaboration with Netflix. Showrunner Jackie Hoyt, who has worked on several acclaimed television projects, leads the creative charge for this timely and gripping story.
Rather than focusing just on courtroom drama or technical finance, THE ALTRUISTS is designed to explore the human side of this high-stakes saga. It shows the personal motivations, the pressures, and the complex relationship that fueled a meteoric rise—and a spectacular crash.
With Vancouver standing in for various global locations, the production is already drawing attention in the area. Filming is expected to continue through the fall, with the series likely landing on Netflix sometime in 2026.
Now, THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME Netflix has looked at real-life financial scandals, but THE ALTRUISTS is unique because it combines teen culture, romance and the cryptocurrency boom. Both the entertainment and finance worlds are already paying close attention to it. It has a good cast, an interesting plot, and the support of the Obamas’ production company.
