OSLO, NORWAY
Much of the story is set in Oslo, Norway, which also served as the movie’s primary filming location. Several key scenes, including those at the family home and a local theater, were shot in Oslo’s Thomas Heftyes gate, a historic residential area known for its elegant houses and tree-lined streets.

CANNES, FRANCE – WHERE REEL MEETS REAL
True to the film’s narrative, Cannes, France also served as a key filming site, especially during the time of the Cannes Film Festival. These scenes were shot around the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, the iconic venue of the festival.
The Cannes scenes are not just for glamour—they mark an important turning point in Gustav’s storyline as he tries to re-establish his career and meets a Hollywood star (played by Elle Fanning) who becomes involved in his comeback project. These moments cleverly blur the line between fiction and real-life film culture.
GERMANY – INTERNATIONAL TIES
Finally, Germany served as another production location, most likely due to its co-production involvement. While specific sites in Germany have not been fully disclosed, Trier’s team utilized some urban European backdrops that fit seamlessly with the film’s international scope and themes of artistic reinvention.
