Where Was Our Times Filmed? Top Mexico City Locations Revealed

-

The 2025 Mexican romantic comedy and science fiction film Our Times (Nuestros tiempos) is one of the most anticipated titles on Netflix this year. Directed by Chava Cartas and written by Angélica Gudiño and Juan Carlos Garzón, the film combines love, time travel, and personal growth—all wrapped in a lighthearted, emotional story. It stars Lucero and Benny Ibarra, two celebrated Mexican actors, in the lead roles.

Here on NetFilming, we explore exactly where this movie was shot and how its stunning locations help bring the story to life.

What Is Our Times About?

The story centers around Nora and Héctor, a married couple and physics professors living in 1966. When they mistakenly turn on a time machine, they are sent over 60 years into the future, to the year 2025.

On this new planet, Nora finds a more progressive society where her work and uniqueness are finally recognized. Héctor, on the other hand, has a hard time adjusting since he feels out of place in a world where traditional gender roles have shifted. Their journey is funny and touching and it looks at how love, identity and purpose change from one generation to the next.

Draco Films made the movie, Netflix is in charge of distributing it and Víctor Hernández Stumphauser wrote the music and Beto Casillas shot the movie. It lasts about 90 minutes and will be available on Netflix around the world on June 11, 2025.

Where Was Our Times Filmed?

The whole movie was shot entirely in Mexico, with most of the sequences shot in Mexico City. The locations were chosen with care to show both the retro style of the 1960s and the current style of the 2020s. The filmmakers employed a smart mix of images to improve the story in two different historical periods.

Main Location: School of Architecture, UNAM – Mexico City

A major portion of Our Times was filmed at the School of Architecture located at UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), in Mexico City. This location was used to portray both 1966 and 2025, allowing the setting to evolve along with the story.

Ciudad Universitaria is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a key part of modern Mexican architecture. It was the right setting to show the change between the two timelines because of its large space, abstract murals and mid-century style. The filmmakers were able to show the characters’ history and future without ever leaving the same room because the buildings and designs were so different.

The School of Architecture at UNAM is more than just a place to shoot. It is very important to Mexico’s culture and education. It is a symbol of the country’s intellectual and creative vigor and is known for producing some of the best architects in Latin America. That makes it not only look good on television, but it also has a deeper meaning for the story.

When Was Our Times Filmed?

Netflix hasn’t officially declared when the movie was filmed, although it’s thought to have happened between late 2024 and early 2025. This chronology fits with the plan for post-production and release, since the movie is set to come out in the middle of 2025.

The production team used a combination of practical sets, outdoor locations and university interiors to portray scenes from both the 1960s and the present day. With the help of modern cinematography and minimal visual effects, the filmmakers created a smooth transition between time periods while staying grounded in real locations.

Our Times Behind The Scenes

Our Times (Nuestros tiempos) was a mix of technological ingenuity and emotional narrative behind the camera. Director Chava Cartas added his own touch of humor and emotion to the movie. He worked closely with the cast and crew to make sure the time-travel story seemed real and believable. While specific quotes from Cartas or the cast haven’t been publicly shared yet, it’s clear from interviews and production notes that everyone involved embraced the film’s dual-timeline challenge.

The scenes shot at UNAM’s School of Architecture were particularly demanding. The production team recreated both the 1966 and 2025 settings on the same campus. That meant careful set dressing, lighting changes and modern props—like smartphones and digital signage—to transform the same corridors and classrooms into different eras. Cinematographer Beto Casillas used a mix of warm, grainy filters for the 1960s sequences and crisp, vibrant tones for the 2025 scenes, highlighting the characters’ emotional states along with the era’s atmosphere.

Lead actors Lucero (Nora) and Benny Ibarra (Héctor) reportedly built a strong rapport with the director and cinematographer. On set, they were encouraged to explore how their characters’ reactions differ in a strange new world. While Lucero’s character finds confidence and purpose in seeing societal progress, Ibarra’s Héctor is depicted as awkward and unsure—generating many scenes of real, relatable tension. This dynamic reportedly became even more alive when the team filmed in real university spaces filled with students, naturally amplifying Nora’s empowerment and Héctor’s discomfort.

Production designer Julieta Jiménez coordinated with the UNAM authorities to respect the campus’s architectural integrity while enabling modern and retro modifications. She used era-specific furniture, posters and lab equipment to enhance authenticity. Combined with Víctor Hernández Stumpfhauser’s emotionally resonant score, the result is a cohesive visual and auditory experience that supports the film’s themes without distracting from the storytelling.

From logistics to lighting plans, short prep times and tight schedules, the behind-the-scenes atmosphere reflected a balance of efficiency and creative problem-solving. The team managed to preserve the campus’s character while effectively shifting its appearance across timelines. This made Our Times feel immersive and emotionally authentic, enhancing the central message of love, change and self-discovery.
