Where Was Netflix’s “Untamed” Filmed? Full Guide To Filming Locations

-

UNTAMED, Netflix‘s newest mystery thriller, has stunning scenery and a lot of suspense. The six-episode limited series came out on July 17, 2025. It was created by Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith, who also wrote them.

A National Park Service agent named Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) is at the center of the show. He is investigating a brutal murder that brings up secrets from both his own past and the wilderness. The series also stars Sam Neill (Paul Souter), Rosemarie DeWitt (Jill Bodwin), Wilson Bethel (Shane Maguire), Lily Santiago (Naya Vasquez)—and Ezra Franky (Lucy Cook).

Though set in the awe-inspiring landscape of Yosemite National Park, the series was not filmed in California. Instead, the production took place almost entirely in British Columbia, Canada, a region known for its cinematic wilderness and advanced film infrastructure.

WHERE WAS “UNTAMED” FILMED?

Production on Untamed began in June 2024 and wrapped by SeptemberOctober 2024. Though the story is set in Yosemite National Park, with its ancient sequoias, iconic El Capitan cliffs, and Tunnel View waterfalls, the filming was actually completed almost entirely in British Columbia, Canada. The scenic wilderness, advanced post-production facilities, and streamlined filming permissions made the province an ideal stand-in for Yosemite’s natural beauty.

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Vancouver was the main place where the movies were made. A lot of the indoor filming took place at North Shore Studios, which is a popular place for movies to be shot in the area. Because the city was close to natural parks and mountains, it was a great place to film scenes in both cities and remote areas.

MOUNT SEYMOUR, NORTH VANCOUVER

Located in Mount Seymour Provincial Park, this mountain reaches a summit of 1,449 meters and offers snow-covered trails, forested slopes, and sweeping views. It doubled as parts of Yosemite’s rugged wilderness in the show, serving as a setting for several intense outdoor sequences involving Kyle Turner’s investigation.

MURDO FRAZER PARK, NORTH VANCOUVER

A charming, wooded area known for its historic Murdo Frazer cabin, the park was transformed for UNTAMED’s cabin scenes. With its creeks and forest trails, it gave scenes that were supposed to show remote park ranger stations a real look. The cabin, which has been used in many other productions, was a key setting for Turner’s scenes with other characters.

SEA TO SKY GONDOLA, SQUAMISH

The Squamish Sea to Sky Gondola, which gives you a view of Howe Sound and the mountains nearby, is one of the most beautiful places used in the show. It was 885 meters above sea level, which made it possible to get the perfect high-altitude shots to give the show a wide, movie-like feel. In scenes where characters deal with both nature and personal revelations—the gondola and nearby hiking trails are used.

DEROHE, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Near Nicomen Mountain in the Fraser Valley is this small, unincorporated community. Deroche was used as a quiet, rural setting for several scenes—standing in for remote parts of Yosemite Valley because of its peaceful surroundings and lack of modern infrastructure. The natural setting added to the show’s themes of danger hiding behind beauty.

CHIP KERR PARK, PORT MOODY

A lot of the filming for Untamed took place in Chip Kerr Park in Port Moody, British Columbia. Early in August 2024, the area between 2995 Hope St. and 3002 Henry St. was given a rough look with fake graffiti and new names for buildings, including “Casa Bueno.”

Along Hope and William Streets, production trucks, tools, and a boom lift were seen, and cameras caught scenes outside the apartment complex. Eric Bana was present on set during this shoot, which coincided with his birthday. It’s likely that scenes with off-site investigations or character flashbacks took place here.

MAPLE RIDGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Though specific scenes filmed in Maple Ridge haven’t been detailed publicly, the area’s natural settings and film-friendly policies make it a consistent backdrop for wilderness scenes. It likely served as another stand-in for the diverse ecosystems found in Yosemite.

WHY CANADA STOOD IN FOR YOSEMITE

According to co-creator Mark L. Smith, the decision to film in Canada wasn’t just logistical. “Everyone thinks of Yosemite as this beautiful place with all the vistas and all the scenery, but we were trying to touch on the dangers that are just beyond that,” he said in an interview with Tudum. British Columbia allowed the team to capture those dangers—lush forests, steep cliffs, and isolated terrain—with fewer restrictions than filming inside a real U.S. National Park.

The availability of top-tier studios, skilled local crews, and the support of Canadian film commissions also played a crucial role. Moreover, Canada offers tax incentives and fewer location-related challenges, which helped streamline the production process.
