AN HONEST LIFE, a Swedish original movie that will premiere on July 31, 2025, is another exciting Scandinavian thriller that Netflix will show around the world. The movie is based on the popular book by Joakim Zander and was directed by Mikael Marcimain. Linn Gottfridsson wrote the screenplay.
AN HONEST LIFE follows Simon, a young man who moves to Lund with dreams of studying law. His hopes of doing well in school quickly fade, though, when he meets Max. Max is a rebellious and attractive woman who draws him into a world of danger, lies—and unclear morals. As Simon gets caught up in protests, hidden plans—and a dangerous underground life, he quickly realizes that the decisions he’s made may not be able to be changed.
Simon Lööf, Nora Rios, and Peter Andersson are in the cast, along with Willy Ramnek Petri, Arvid von Heland, Nathalie Merchant, Christoffer Rigeblad, Fabian Hedlund, Lucas Grimstedt—and Alice Andersson.
WHERE WAS AN HONEST LIFE FILMED?
The main filming for An Honest Life began in October 2023 and took place mostly in Sweden. Lund, an old city in the south of the country, was the main place where the movie was shot.
Lund, Sweden—THE CENTER OF THE MOVIE
A lot of the movie was shot at and near Lund University, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in Scandinavia. The Gothic and Romanesque architecture of the university made the story of Simon’s fall from academia to chaos feel real and evocative.
Lund is in southern Sweden’s SkÃ¥ne County. It’s famous for its well-kept medieval streets, cobblestone alleyways, and a city center that’s full of historical charm. Some important places, like the Lund Cathedral, a famous Romanesque church from the 12th century, and the Kulturen open-air museum, may have been used in the movie in a subtle way to make it feel like Simon’s life was really happening in this quiet college town.
The historic parts of the city were also very important to the look of the movie. Lund is a great place for a story about rebellion, class conflict, and loss of hope because it has narrow streets, classic European architecture, and cafes that are friendly to students.
UNIVERSITETSBIBLIOTEKET AT LUND UNIVERSITY
One of the standout locations used in the filming of An Honest Life is the Universitetsbiblioteket at Lund University. This historic library, known for its grand neo-Gothic architecture and scholarly atmosphere, served as an ideal setting to reflect Simon’s early academic journey. The interiors and exteriors of the library provide a classic backdrop that captures both the prestige of Lund University and the introspective tone of the film. As a central landmark in Lund, the University Library enhances the film’s authentic Swedish academic setting.
WHY LUND WAS THE PERFECT LOCATION
There was more than one reason why they chose to film in Lund. The film’s themes of student unrest, social inequality, and underground resistance are deeply rooted in the culture of universities and the way cities are built. The setting shows the psychological and social aspects of the story.
The production also seems to have used real city locations instead of studio sets a lot, which gives the story a more real and immediate feel.
As of now, glimpses on social media from the cast and crew suggest that a number of exterior shots were shot at well-known Lund campus landmarks and public spaces. Fans who go back after the movie comes out might even see some of the real-life places that were used in the movie.
