The romantic comedy The Love Hypothesis, based on the bestselling novel by Ali Hazelwood, has officially started filming in Montreal, Canada. The movie stars Riverdale actress Lili Reinhart in the lead role and will shoot throughout July and August 2025.
About the Film
The Love Hypothesis is about a smart biology PhD student named Olive Smith who starts a fake relationship with Dr. Adam Carlsen, a professor who is both scary and attractive. What starts out as a convenient plan quickly throws their ideas about love and themselves into chaos they didn’t expect.
This light-hearted story quickly became a fan favorite after it was published in 2021. The book spent ten months on the New York Times bestseller list and has been translated into 40 languages.
Lili Reinhart Takes the Lead
Lili Reinhart not only stars as Olive but is also executive producing the film. Known for her role as Betty Cooper on Riverdale, Reinhart has taken on a range of projects lately. She recently starred in Hal & Harper, which premiered at Sundance, and she continues to work on both indie and studio productions.
She will also be in American Sweatshop and Forbidden Fruits, which shows that she can work in a lot of different types of movies. Reinhart steps into the rom-com spotlight with The Love Hypothesis.
Filming Begins in Montreal
The filming is currently taking place in Montreal, Canada, which is a popular place for filming. Historic streets, a wide range of buildings—and an environment that is great for filming make the city a top choice for international projects.
Filming will go on until August 2025, and different indoor and outdoor locations in the city will be used. Locals have seen film crews and equipment working in downtown Montreal, but no official filming locations have been named yet.
Montreal has doubled as New York City and other major cities in many past productions. It’s likely the same approach will be used for The Love Hypothesis, especially since the story takes place in an academic and urban setting.
Creative Team Behind the Scenes
The film is directed by Claire Scanlon, best known for directing the Netflix rom-com Set It Up. She previously worked with Amazon MGM on The People We Hate at the Wedding and brings strong experience in comedy and romance storytelling.
The screenplay is written by Sarah Rothschild, who also wrote The Sleepover for Netflix. Producing the film is Elizabeth Cantillon, known for The Girl in the Spider’s Web and Charlie’s Angels. Ali Hazelwood, the original author, is also part of the executive team.
Hazelwood expressed her excitement about the adaptation, sharing her trust in the team and saying she hopes they enjoy filming as much as she enjoyed writing the novel.
Release Date
Fans of the book are eagerly waiting for more updates on the movie, including casting news for Dr. Adam Carlsen and a possible release date. With filming set to wrap in late summer 2025, the film may be ready for a late 2026 premiere.
