Marvel Studios’ IRONHEART is one of the most anticipated Disney+ series in the MCU’s Phase Five. Created by Chinaka Hodge, this six-episode miniseries follows Riri Williams, played by Dominique Thorne, a tech prodigy who builds her own high-powered suit of armor and gets caught in a conflict where technology clashes with dark magic. Set in the aftermath of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), Ironheart takes Riri from MIT back to her hometown of Chicago, where she encounters Parker Robbins / The Hood, portrayed by Anthony Ramos.
Alongside Thorne and Ramos, the cast includes Lyric Ross, Alden Ehrenreich, Regan Aliyah, Manny Montana, Matthew Elam and Anji White. Even though the story is set in Chicago, Ironheart was filmed in a number of important places. Take a close look at these places where the show was filmed.
WHERE WAS IRONHEART FILMED?
Ironheart (2025) was filmed in Atlanta at Trilith Studios and Chicago, with key scenes shot on Edgewood Avenue and Chicago streets between 2022 and 2024.
ATLANTA, GEORGIA, USA
Atlanta served as the primary production base for Ironheart. Most of the filming was done at Trilith Studios in Fayetteville, Georgia, under the working title “Wise Guy.” This state-of-the-art facility has been a major hub for Marvel Studios projects, and Ironheart was no exception.
Production officially began in early June 2022 with Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes directing. Cinematographers Alison Kelly and Ante Cheng handled the visuals. Several sets and backdrops were constructed within Trilith Studios, including interior scenes and high-tech laboratory sequences involving Riri’s suit.
A major sequence was also shot outdoors in downtown Atlanta. In particular, Edgewood Avenue in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood was transformed to double as a Chicago street.
EDGEWOOD AVENUE, ATLANTA, GEORGIA
One of the most unique filming spots was a vacant lot at 431 Edgewood Avenue, where a full-scale, realistic White Castle restaurant set was built. This structure was used to simulate a famous Chicago-based fast-food joint. While it appeared fully functional, it was only a set built for the show. Reports indicate that the building was featured in a key action scene and was likely destroyed or altered during the sequence.
This temporary set received significant attention from Atlanta locals. Nearby businesses such as Joystick Gamebar and Georgia Beer Garden had to close temporarily during filming in September 2022. The production reportedly used Joystick for equipment storage and Georgia Beer Garden for background extras.
This stretch of Edgewood Avenue was shut down for a few days, emphasizing just how important the sequence was. Although Ironheart is set in Chicago, this stretch of Atlanta successfully replicated the look and feel of the Windy City.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, USA
Although the bulk of Ironheart was filmed in Atlanta, the series made strategic use of Chicago to ground Riri Williams in her hometown. Filming in Chicago began in late May 2022, primarily to capture exterior establishing shots and background plates essential for the show’s visual effects.
Later, between October 24 and November 3, 2022, the production returned to Chicago for a more extensive shoot. Scenes were filmed in South Side, Near North Side, and downtown Chicago. These real-world locations were essential for anchoring Riri’s story in her authentic environment, offering the city’s distinct architecture and character that couldn’t be replicated on a soundstage.
Filming in these neighborhoods likely included outdoor street scenes, apartment exteriors, and local landmarks that tie Riri’s personal life to the city she calls home. The use of actual locations, even if limited in scope, was important for fans familiar with Riri’s comic book origins in Chicago.
TRILITH STUDIOS, FAYETTEVILLE, GEORGIA
Much of the interior work, including the building of Riri’s high-tech Ironheart suit and her lab scenes, were shot at Trilith Studios. Marvel Studios has long relied on this facility for its state-of-the-art stages and backlot capabilities.
A practical Ironheart suit was built specifically for filming to assist with lighting and visual effects, following the same approach as the original Iron Man (2008). This practical suit allowed for more realistic interactions on set and helped with reflections and textures in post-production.
Trilith also likely housed the scenes involving Parker Robbins and his dark magic, creating a visual contrast between his mystical abilities and Riri’s advanced technology.
ADDITIONAL FILMING: RESHOOTS IN 2024
After wrapping principal photography in November 2022, the production team returned for additional photography between February and April 2024. While the exact locations of these reshoots were not publicly confirmed, it is presumed they took place either in Georgia or on studio lots with green-screen stages to enhance action scenes or add new story elements.
