-

ICE ROAD: VENGEANCE is a 2025 American action thriller film written and directed by Jonathan Hensleigh. Serving as the sequel to the 2021 movie The Ice Road, this follow-up shifts the action from icy Canadian landscapes to the majestic Himalayas.
Mike McCann, played by Liam Neeson, returns to Nepal to fulfill his late brother’s last request to have his ashes scattered on Mount Everest.  But things quickly go wrong when Mike and his guide Dhani (played by Bingbing Fan) get into a dangerous fight with hired guns. When Mike and his companion Dhani (Bingbing Fan) fight armed mercenaries, things swiftly turn sour.  Mahesh Jadu plays Rudra Yash, while other actors in the movie include Bernard Curry, Amelia Bishop, Grace O’Sullivan, Saksham Sharma, CJ Bloomfield and Michala Banas.

WHERE WAS ICE ROAD 2: ROAD TO THE SKY FILMED?

Ice Road: Vengeance was shot across multiple countries, blending real Himalayan landscapes with Australian locations. Principal filming took place in Victoria, Australia, beginning in January 2024. The locations where Ice Road: Vengeance was filmed are broken down here.

MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA

Principal photography for Ice Road: Vengeance began in January 2024 and wrapped up by late February 2024. Much of the filming occurred in and around Melbourne, Victoria. The federal and state governments of Australia supported the production through financial schemes—like the Location Incentive Program and the Victorian Screen Incentive.
According to Natalie Hutchins, minister of acting and creative industries for Victoria, the movie brought in over AUD 30 million and produced about 600 new jobs for the local film sector. With access to cutting-edge facilities for indoor and effects-driven scenes, Melbourne acted as a logistical base. This includes the use of virtual production techniques.

NANTSTUDIOS – DOCKLANDS STUDIOS MELBOURNE

Virtual production at Docklands Studios Melbourne’s NantStudios is a highlight of Ice Road: Vengeance. Numerous interior and high-concept scenarios requiring sophisticated visual effects were shot at these facilities. Filmmakers were able to replicate vast mountain vistas and Himalayan weather conditions in a controlled environment thanks to the studio’s LED volume screens.
This filmmaking method combined on-location realism and CGI to improve immersion without the risks of high-altitude shooting. By combining digital and real aspects, director Jonathan Hensleigh made it possible to film Himalayan sequences securely indoors. This technical advantage reduced the environmental impact of filming in far-flung, fragile environments while simultaneously saving money and time.

WALHALLA, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA

The small heritage town of Walhalla, nestled in Victoria’s Gippsland region, played a central role in Ice Road: Vengeance. Walhalla was established during the gold rush of the 1860s — and because of its historical significance, it was a perfect setting for a traditional Nepalese village. After arriving in early 2024, the production team turned the town center into a Himalayan community. Main Road, Churchill Road, and the area surrounding the Fire Station Museum were used for filming.
Local structures were painted and renamed to reflect Nepali style. For added authenticity, the Rotunda was painted a vivid royal blue, while the Star Hotel was painted neon green. Using 3D point cloud technology, these changes were meticulously recorded in order to preserve the town’s historic buildings. Locals were thrilled to host international stars, such as Liam Neeson, and took part as extras. The Walhalla shoot brought both economic and creative energy to the region, showcasing Australia’s adaptability.

KATHMANDU & BHAKTAPUR, NEPAL

Although most of the Himalayan scenes were filmed in Australia, Ice Road: Vengeance also shot key scenes on location in Nepal. The crew conducted a four-day shoot in and around Kathmandu and Bhaktapur, primarily using Araniko Highway and the historic Patan Durbar Square.
These actual locations were crucial in creating the film’s geographical tone and ensuring that it was rooted in genuine Himalayan imagery. By filming here, the producers was able to capture natural terrain, busy local streets, and cultural textures that would be challenging to accurately recreate in a studio.

MOUNT EVEREST BASE CAMP, NEPAL

One of Ice Road: Vengeance’s more audacious production decisions was to film on-location sequences at the — Mount Everest Base Camp — in March 2024. Since Mike McCann (Liam Neeson) comes here to scatter his late brother’s ashes, this place is essential to the plot. It is difficult to replicate the breathtaking, genuine backdrops of snow-capped peaks and glacier valleys offered by Everest Base Camp.
A crew member’s post referred to the experience as a “dream come true” emphasizing the wonder of filming in one of the most harsh settings on earth. The team was able to securely record important video in spite of logistical obstacles like weather and altitude.

CHAMBA DISTRICT, HIMACHAL PRADESH, INDIA

Extending the movie’s international scope, the production is also scheduled to film, in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, India. According to Chamba Deputy Commissioner Apoorva Devgan, filming will take place in locations like the Pangi Valley, known for its untouched Himalayan beauty.
Chamba offers a backdrop similar to Nepal’s mountain villages, making it an ideal stand-in for additional outdoor scenes. The Indian shoot will further enhance the cultural and geographical richness of the film’s universe.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

With a closing party that was attended by Liam Neeson, other cast members, crew, and local celebrities, the production was highly recognized in Victoria. There was a lot of local enthusiasm, and many members of the community were hired as technical personnel or extras. Social media posts featured everything from 3D photography of historic buildings to stunt preparation and municipal makeovers.
