The 2025 survival thriller HUNTING GROUNDS goes deep into the dangers that can be found in the woods. The movie is directed by Derek Barnes and written by Barnes, James McDougall, and James Mark.
It’s about a mother named Chloe who is trying to get away from her husband who is connected to the mafia. Seeking refuge, she hides in a secluded cabin with a mysterious drifter named Jake, played by Tim Rozon. But as danger creeps closer, Chloe learns Jake may be more deadly than the people she’s running from. Emily Alatalo stars as Chloe, with supporting performances by Jon McLaren (Vincent), Milton Barnes (Zach), Ryan Bainbridge (Lance), and Mikael Conde (Carl).
The atmospheric tension and survival themes of HUNTING GROUNDS were brought to life by filming in real, remote Canadian landscapes that matched the movie’s raw tone.
WHERE WAS HUNTING GROUNDS FILMED?
Most of HUNTING GROUNDS was shot in East Garafraxa, a quiet township in the middle of Central Ontario. East Garafraxa, with its rolling forests and remote countryside, was the perfect place for a story about being alone, facing danger, and surviving.
ELLIOTT TREE FARM – SETTLER’S LOG CABIN
The Settler’s Log Cabin at Elliott Tree Farm in Hillsburgh, East Garafraxa, was the most notable filming location in HUNTING GROUNDS. In the film, Chloe (Emily Alatalo) hides out in this rustic 1850 cabin. Its historic charm and secluded setting gave the film a grounded, realistic tone.
Filmmakers often choose Elliott Tree Farm for its unspoiled landscapes and authentic log structures. Surrounded by tall pine trees, dense forest trails, and quiet meadows, the location perfectly fit the movie’s eerie and suspenseful atmosphere.
Both interior and exterior scenes were shot at the log cabin, enhancing the film’s sense of isolation and danger. The realism of the setting removed the need for built sets or heavy CGI.
WHEN WAS HUNTING GROUNDS FILMED?
The movie HUNTING GROUNDS was mostly made in 2024, in the late summer and early fall. This let the filmmakers use the thick, green forests and moody, changing weather of the countryside in Ontario. The fog, natural light, and dark forests where the movie was shot all helped to shape its look.
