David Benioff praised the location, saying, “Dubrovnik was the ideal choice for King’s Landing. The city’s natural beauty and preserved medieval charm made it feel like it was plucked straight out of George’s world.”
Cushendun Caves, Northern Ireland
Situated in County Antrim, the Cushendun Caves brought one of the season’s most intense moments to life. These caves were used as the Stormlands, where Melisandre gave birth to the shadow assassin.
Carice van Houten, who played Melisandre, described filming here as “eerie and magical. The natural surroundings added a real sense of otherworldliness to the scene.”
Iceland
The icy landscapes of Iceland were the backdrop for the Night’s Watch storyline beyond the Wall. The vast glaciers & the volcanic terrains provided a stark, cold setting that mirrored the series’ dark and mysterious tone.
Kit Harington, who portrayed Jon Snow, remarked, “Iceland’s raw beauty and unforgiving environment brought authenticity to our scenes. It was challenging, but it helped me connect with Jon’s struggles in the North.”
Paint Hall Studios, Belfast
The famous Paint Hall Studios in Belfast, Northern Ireland, were the center of many sets that were used over and over again. The Iron Throne, the Red Keep, and several important story-related interior scenes were all in this place.
Producer Bernie Caulfield remarked, “Paint Hall Studios provided the versatility we needed to construct the intricate sets that define Game of Thrones. It gave us a controlled environment to perfect every detail.”
