Disney’s Coven Academy Pilot Begins Filming In Vancouver

-

Disney Branded Television has officially kicked off production on its latest magical series for young audiences, a pilot titled COVEN ACADEMY (working title). The new supernatural dramedy is being developed for Disney Channel and Disney+, and it’s bringing a dose of spellcraft to a very familiar city—Vancouver, British Columbia.

The project, which follows in the footsteps of Disney’s fan-favorite Hocus Pocus franchise and Marvel’s Agatha All Along, centers on a group of teenage witches-in-training. Together, they must protect their home—New Orleans—from a dark and powerful threat.

Though the show is set in New Orleans, the pilot filming cleverly turned Vancouver’s historic Gastown district into a stand-in for the Crescent City. Onlookers were able to see the transformation unfold as production took over Harbour Light Alley at 5 Powell Street for a night shoot. The narrow brick lane, known for its atmospheric charm and old-world feel, was the perfect spot to double as a mystical version of New Orleans’ famed French Quarter.

Filming for the COVEN ACADEMY pilot began on June 2, 2025, and is scheduled to wrap on June 17, 2025. Production is moving quickly, keeping with the fast-paced schedule of most Disney pilots, and excitement is already building among fans of fantasy TV.

There’s no official release date and no casting information yet, as Disney will first review the pilot before greenlighting a full series. However, the buzz around the production, especially among fans who spotted the Gastown transformation, suggests that the show is already generating interest.

Once more casting details and series news emerge, audiences will be eager to learn more about the young witches who will lead the charge against evil in the Crescent City — even if it’s actually filmed in Vancouver.

The show comes from Tim Federle, the creator and executive producer of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. He is once again teaming up with executive producer Bronwyn North-Reist, both working under Federle’s Chorus Boy Productions banner, which has a creative deal with Disney Branded Television.
