BUGONIA (2025) Filming Locations: Where Was the Sci-Fi Comedy Shot?

-

The upcoming science fiction comedy BUGONIA (2025) is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the movie is a remake of the acclaimed South Korean cult classic Save the Green Planet! by Jang Joon-hwan. The screenplay by Will Tracy and Jang Joon-hwan promises a unique blend of dark comedy, satire, and thrilling sci-fi.

Focus Features will release the film in the US on October 24, 2025, about two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap a powerful CEO of a major corporation, believing she is an alien trying to destroy Earth. Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone star.

Besides its intriguing plot and stellar cast, BUGONIA was shot in stunning locations worldwide. The complete filming locations for this odd and thought-provoking story are below.

WHEN AND WHERE WAS BUGONIA FILMED?

Principal photography for BUGONIA began in July 2024 and wrapped up on September 17, 2024, with filming taking place across the United Kingdom, the United States, and Greece.

HIGH WYCOMBE, ENGLAND, UK

The movie BUGONIA began filming in High Wycombe, an English town in the county of Buckinghamshire. High Wycombe, which is known for its historic buildings and beautiful scenery, was a great place for the movie’s opening scenes. Screen Global Production says that this was the first official place where the movie was shot.

DITTON PARK (BOTANICA), NEAR SLOUGH, ENGLAND

Some indoor or office-related scenes were shot at Botanica in Ditton Park, located near Slough. This modern office space was clean and professional, and it may have been used for scenes with Emma Stone’s character as the CEO. The beautiful and private facilities at Ditton Park made it a great place for controlled shooting.

OXSHOTT, SURREY, ENGLAND

Oxshott, a pretty village in the Surrey suburbs, was also used for filming. Oxshott is known for its wooded and hilly landscape. It is located between the towns of Esher and Leatherhead.

HENLEY-ON-THAMES, OXFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND

Henley-on-Thames, a cute riverside town in Oxfordshire, was used as another important UK location for the movie. The town’s natural beauty and traditional English charm made it a good place for exterior shots, and it was close to Reading, Maidenhead, and Oxford. Its proximity to the River Thames may have also played a part in important visual themes in the movie.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, USA

One of the top U.S. filming locations for BUGONIA (2025) is Atlanta, Georgia, with its mix of modern cityscapes and classic neighborhoods. Filming began near the Jackson Street Bridge, offering a dramatic Atlanta skyline view. This famous location was likely used for visually intense or symbolic scenes in several major productions.

The next day, the crew moved to Downtown Atlanta, close to Wall Street, to capture the fast-paced energy of the city’s tall buildings and narrow streets. Another day of filming took place in Ansley Park, a prestigious Midtown neighborhood known for its historic homes and tree-lined avenues. This location may have been used for more personal or suburban storylines.

Atlanta’s variety of filming locations provided BUGONIA with a strong visual contrast, enhancing its sci-fi storytelling and confirming the city’s status as a major hub for movie production.

SARAKINIKO BEACH, MILOS ISLAND, GREECE

BUGONIA’s final and possibly most beautiful location is Sarakiniko Beach on Milos Island in Greece. For its otherworldly appearance and lunar-like white rock formations and clear waters, filmmakers love the beach. Director Yorgos Lanthimos initially wanted to shoot the film’s final scenes at the Acropolis of Athens—but permission was denied by the Central Archaeological Council of Greece. As a result, Sarakiniko Beach was selected for the climactic scenes. Filming on Milos Island was completed in May 2025, following a scouting trip by Lanthimos two weeks prior.

The film was shot by Robbie Ryan, an Irish cinematographer— using 35mm film with VistaVision cameras. Ryan works with Yorgos Lanthimos four times. 35mm and VistaVision give the film a cinematic—vintage look that emphasizes Lanthimos’ surreal—stylized style.
