Billionaires’ Bunker Filming Locations (2025) – Where Was It Shot?

-

Billionaires’ Bunker (Spanish title: El Refugio Atómico) is a new Spanish Netflix original series created by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, the same creators behind the global hit Money Heist. Known for their unique storytelling and thrilling plots, they’re now back with something just as ambitious—but this time, it’s set underground.

We at NetFilming delved into the actual filming locations of this high-stakes, futuristic drama. Surprisingly, the entire production took place within the confines of Madrid, Spain.

What’s the Billionaires’ Bunker About?

The story centers on a group of ultra-wealthy families who retreat to a high-tech underground bunker called Kimera Underground Park as the world outside plunges into World War III. The bunker isn’t just a shelter—it’s a luxurious hideaway equipped with everything from spas and gyms to Zen gardens and cocktail bars.

But while they may have escaped the chaos on the surface, the real drama unfolds inside. Power struggles, old family rivalries, and deep secrets threaten to tear them apart.

Where Was Billionaires’ Bunker Filmed?

The entire series was filmed in Madrid, Spain, primarily inside Netflix’s Tres Cantos production hub—also known as Ciudad de la Tele (TV City). This massive studio complex is located in Tres Cantos, a town just north of central Madrid.

The series was filmed in Netflix’s Tres Cantos production hub—Ciudad de la Tele, Madrid, Spain.

Netflix’s Tres Cantos Hub—Main Filming Location

This high-end production facility has become one of the most important filming locations for Netflix’s Spanish originals. Opened in 2019, Tres Cantos is home to some of Netflix’s biggest titles like Money Heist, Élite, Sky Rojo, and now Billionaires’ Bunker.

Here’s what makes this location ideal for a project of this scale:

  • 10 Sound Stages: These large indoor stages allowed the team to create complex, realistic underground sets that feel immersive and high-end.
  • Volume Technology: Similar to what’s used in The Mandalorian, this involves massive LED walls that display ultra-realistic environments. It allows actors to perform in dynamic surroundings without needing to shoot on actual locations.
  • In-House Post-Production: All editing, color grading, sound design, and effects were handled within the same hub—making the workflow seamless.

Everything seen inside the bunker—from luxurious suites and private lounges to high-tech surveillance rooms—was likely built from scratch on these sound stages. Even the lighting, architecture, and materials were carefully designed to reflect a retro-futuristic Bauhaus style, using amber and turquoise tones, plastic finishes, and minimalist curves to create an oddly comforting yet unsettling atmosphere.

Colmenar Viejo

Colmenar Viejo—Large-Scale Set Construction

Beyond Tres Cantos, the production also used a nearby facility in Colmenar Viejo, another Madrid-area location. Known for hosting earlier productions like Sky Rojo, it offered the space needed to construct over 8,000 square meters of set pieces—making it one of the most extensive set builds in Spanish TV history.

The sets included full replicas of gyms, a basketball court, spa rooms, and even the central atrium of the bunker. These were created with full-scale realism to keep the scenes authentic and tightly controlled.

Exterior scenes of Billionaires’ Bunker shot at Playa de la Barrosa

Playa de la Barrosa—Brief Exterior Shoots

While most of the show was filmed indoors, a few exterior scenes were also shot on location. One such spot was Playa de la Barrosa, located in Costa de la Luz, Andalusia. Filming took place in Loma del Puerco, a scenic beachside area known for its dunes and dramatic coastlines. These shots were likely used to represent scenes from before or after the characters entered the bunker.

What to Expect from Billionaires’ Bunker

While the filming location gives us a peek behind the scenes, the real draw is the story. With a script penned by Pina, Lobato, and a talented writing team, expect sharp dialogue, shocking twists, and plenty of drama. The bunker’s lavish setting contrasts with the characters’ messy personal lives, making for a series that’s as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. Whether you’re a fan of thrillers, dark comedies, or just love a good Netflix binge, this show is one to watch.

Billionaires’ Bunker Behind The Scenes

The creators of Billionaires’ Bunker challenged the boundaries of production design and technology to create an immersive, luxurious bunker world. Álex Pina explained their vision: “La cámara puede seguir a los personajes sin parar, como si fuera un videojuego,” highlighting their aim for continuous, fluid shots that draw viewers deeper into the story. The scale and detail of the set reflect this ambition.

The main bunker, Kimera Underground Park, was constructed at Netflix’s studios in Tres Cantos and Colmenar Viejo. Art Director Abdón Alcañiz said the design team worked for eight months on the central gallery, inspired by mid-century styles from the 1950s. He shared: “Intenta invitarnos a la calma… influenciados por el estilo de la época dorada de los años cincuenta”. This unique blend of Bauhaus simplicity with “retro-futuristic” tones gives off both warmth and unease.

The production used LED “volume” stages—a technology similar to The Mandalorian—allowing digital backgrounds to envelop actors during scenes. Pina commented, “Hoy la ciencia ficción es casi naturalismo,” explaining how they grounded the futuristic bunker in real-world feeling. Filming even involved indoor drones to capture sweeping interior shots uninterrupted, making the set feel like a single, connected living environment.

Diego Ávalos, VP of Content at Netflix Spain, emphasized the project’s ambition: “No ha habido una serie tan ambiciosa en la historia de España como esta,” calling it the most technically and creatively complex Spanish production to date. The process spanned nearly three years—from 48 script revisions to sourcing materials from Germany, the US, and the Netherlands—and involved fully reimagining a previous prison-like set into a luxurious, futuristic subterranean city.
