HBO’s Harry Potter Series Officially Begins Filming: First Look at Dominic McLaughlin as New Harry Potter

-

After years of anticipation, HBO has finally started production on its new Harry Potter TV series. This fresh adaptation, based on J.K. Rowling’s original books, promises a deeper and more faithful version of the magical story fans around the world cherish. The exciting update was officially confirmed by Warner Bros. in early July 2025, and fans are already buzzing about what’s to come.

At NetFilming, we’re just as thrilled to share that the studio also revealed the first-ever image of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter. Wearing the familiar round glasses, Hogwarts robe, and that recognizable lightning scar, Dominic looks every bit like the young wizard we all know. His gentle smile and youthful charm have already won over a good portion of the fanbase—many of whom were unsure about someone new taking on this iconic role.

Online reactions came in quickly after the photo was posted. One fan on social media wrote, “I think Dominic McLaughlin is even cuter than Daniel Radcliffe,” while another added, “He looks eerily similar to Daniel Radcliffe.” Those comparisons are inevitable, but early impressions suggest that McLaughlin is being warmly welcomed as the new face of the franchise.

The new series will have a much bigger story than the original films. Rumour has it that each season will focus on one book, which will let the creators explore all of Rowling’s world without leaving out important scenes. This format has excited longtime fans who felt that some of their favorite book moments were left out in the movies.

Casting Updates and New Faces at Hogwarts

In addition to McLaughlin, the show will also feature Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. These young actors will grow into their roles as the series progresses—just like the original trio did over a decade ago.

Here are more confirmed cast members:

  • Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom
  • Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley
  • Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch
  • Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander
  • Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall
  • Paapa Essiedu as Professor Snape
  • Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell
  • Paul Whitehouse as caretaker Argus Filch
  • Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley
  • Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy
  • Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy
  • Bel Powley, Daniel Rigby, and others as the Dursleys and supporting characters

There’s also a lot of buzz around Nick Frost, who takes on the role of Hagrid, and John Lithgow portraying Dumbledore. Paapa Essiedu will step into the shoes of Snape, bringing a fresh dynamic to the role.

A New Era for the Wizarding World

It’s been more than ten years since the last Harry Potter movie came out. Daniel Radcliffe’s performance as the Boy Who Lived is still legendary, but now fans can experience the magic again through a new lens and with a new group of actors.

Not only is the cast different, but the show is also dedicated to sticking to the books. The creative team has a lot of experience telling stories, with Francesca Gardiner (known for Succession) as the showrunner and Mark Mylod as the director. J.K. Rowling is even an executive producer, and early reports say she’s very happy with how things are going so far.

When Will the Series Be Released?

Although production is now underway, it’ll still be a while before the show hits our screens. HBO has confirmed a planned 2027 premiere, but no specific release date has been announced yet. Fans can expect teasers or trailers sometime next year, as filming continues at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden—the same location where the original movies were filmed.

It’s certain that the new Harry Potter series is going to be something great. If you’ve been a fan of the Wizarding World for a long time or just started, there’s a lot to look forward to. We’ll keep you up-to-date here on NetFilming as more magical news comes in.
