Josh Holloway’s Western Flint Wraps Filming in Montana

-

Production is gearing up for Flint, a new Western drama based on the novel by Louis L’Amour. The film, which will star and be produced by Josh Holloway.

Written and directed by Ryan Whitaker, Flint tells the story of James Kettleman, a hard-edged East Coast businessman who returns to New Mexico and assumes the identity of Flint, the name once used by the outlaw who raised him. The story follows Kettleman’s journey as he becomes caught in a violent range war and meets a determined rancher, Nancy Kennigan, who challenges him to rethink his legacy.

Filming Across the West

When the film was first announced in April 2025, production was expected to take place entirely in New Mexico, a well-known hub for Westerns due to its wide landscapes, period-style towns, and film-friendly incentives. However, a July 14 Instagram post from crew member Garrett Hardy Davis confirmed that the production had wrapped in Montana, praising the cast, crew, and director Ryan Whitaker for their work in “beautiful Montana.”

While no official statement has been made about the use of both locations, it’s possible the filmmakers utilized both New Mexico and Montana to capture the vast, rugged frontier atmosphere required by the story.

Directed and written by Ryan Whitaker, Flint tells the story of James Kettleman, a ruthless East Coast businessman who returns to the untamed frontier under the name Flint, taken from the notorious killer who raised him. As he becomes entangled in a brutal range war, his relationship with a strong-willed rancher, Nancy Kennigan, challenges him to confront the legacy he hopes to leave behind.

The project is a long-time passion for Holloway, who has been working to adapt the novel for nearly two decades alongside Beau L’Amour, son of the original author. “To play this incredible role and help bring it to the screen as a producer makes this project even more special,” Holloway said.

Behind the Scenes Team

In addition to starring, Josh Holloway also serves as a producer. He is joined by:

  • Ken Carpenter (The Shift, Finding You)

  • Mark Pentecost (Florida Wild)

  • Jerilyn Esquibel (The Unbreakable Boy)

  • Beau L’Amour, son of Louis L’Amour

The film is a joint production between Tirian Films and The Pentecost Group, with UTA Independent Film Group handling North American sales.

Filming Wrapped in Montana

Although early production reports indicated that filming would take place in New Mexico, it was a July 15 Instagram post by crew member Garrett Hardy Davis that confirmed the production had instead wrapped in Montana. In his post, Davis thanked director Ryan Whitaker and praised the cast and crew for their work in “beautiful Montana,” calling it one of the most rewarding collaborations of his career.

Given that Flint was confirmed to have wrapped in Montana, this image likely shows a set located in Montana, possibly in or near towns like Bozeman, Livingston, or a ranch property that rents Western sets.
