In Vitro (2024) is a haunting sci-fi thriller movie set in the near future and directed by Will Howarth and Tom McKeith. The screenplay is co-written by Howarth, Talia Zucker, and McKeith. This atmospheric feature follows Layla, played by Talia Zucker, and her husband Jack, portrayed by Ashley Zukerman. The couple tries out biotechnology and new farming methods while living alone on a remote cattle ranch. WHERE WAS IN VITRO FILMED?
The principal photography for In Vitro was completed over five weeks in early 2022. The movie was shot entirely in the state of New South Wales, Australia—specifically in the rural towns of Cooma and Goulburn. These locations were chosen for their stunning and cinematic regional backdrops, which align perfectly with the film’s tone and isolated setting.
COOMA, NEW SOUTH WALES
One of the main filming locations was Cooma, which is in the Snowy Monaro region of southern New South Wales. This town, which is known for its wide open plains, nearby mountains, and unpredictable weather, helped make In Vitro feel creepy and alone. It’s scary how true the story feels because of how starkly beautiful the Snowy-Monaro region is. It makes you feel like the characters are really cut off from the rest of the world, both physically and mentally.
Lisa Shaunessy of Arcadia liked the choice of setting and said that the “majestic Snowy-Monaro” area was one of the best visual parts of the movie. The landscapes around Cooma not only bring the intense emotional drama on screen into sharp relief, but they also give the story a sense of raw realism.
GOULBURN, NEW SOUTH WALES
Another major location used during the shoot was Goulburn, a historic regional city also in New South Wales. Known for its colonial-era architecture and wide rural surroundings, Goulburn gave the filmmakers access to a mix of visual textures, from wide farmland shots to more confined domestic settings.
POST-PRODUCTION IN ORANGE
The movie was shot in Cooma and Goulburn, but the editing was done in Orange, which is also a regional city in New South Wales. Screen NSW says that the movie created up to 127 jobs in the area, which helped the economy and took advantage of the skilled workers that are available.
