The Stan Original Scrublands is back with an exciting new season that delves deeper into the murky worlds of murder, memory, and mystery. Based on the best-selling books by Chris Hammer, this Australian drama series premiered for the first time on Stan on November 16, 2023. This show, which was made by Easy Tiger, really connected with viewers because of its moody stories and strong performances. Because Season 1 did so well, a second season was announced. Now, Scrublands: Silver—Season 2 continues the story, moving it to a new place that becomes just as important to the plot as the characters.
WHAT IS SCRUBLANDS ABOUT?
In the first season, Luke Arnold (Black Sails) plays journalist Martin Scarsden who comes to a small town that is still reeling from a terrible tragedy: a local priest shot and killed five parishioners. What starts out as a simple assignment quickly turns into a complicated web of lies and secrets. Martin’s path between truth and lie gets less clear as he goes.
Season 2 is based on Hammer’s follow-up novel Silver. The story picks up a year after the events of Scrublands, with Martin returning to his coastal hometown of Port Silver in Western Australia. Accompanied by his partner Mandy Bond (played by Bella Heathcote, Pieces of Her), he hopes for a peaceful new chapter. But his plans are upended when he discovers his childhood friend Jasper has been murdered—and Mandy is the prime suspect. As Martin works to clear Mandy’s name, he is pulled into a haunting investigation that forces him to confront his past and the buried truths of his hometown.
SEASON 1 FILMING LOCATION – A QUICK LOOK
Season 1 of Scrublands was filmed in Victoria, Australia. The dry and rural landscapes of regional Victoria were perfect for re-creating the town in the series that was suffering from drought. The empty, dusty land made the show’s themes of being alone and secrets stronger.
WHERE WAS SCRUBLANDS SEASON 2 FILMED?
For Scrublands Season 2, production shifted from Victoria to Western Australia, focusing specifically on the coastal town of Augusta in the state’s South West region.
AUGUSTA, WESTERN AUSTRALIA
The majority of Scrublands: Silver was filmed in Augusta, a picturesque coastal town located in the South West region of Western Australia. With its dramatic sea cliffs, rugged coastline, and lush forests, Augusta offered the perfect backdrop for the fictional town of Port Silver.
Producer Martha Coleman, of Third Act Stories, explained the choice in glowing terms:
“The West Australian crew was exceptional and almost all heads of department were local. The locations we used were outstandingly beautiful — even in winter — showing a different West Australian ‘look’.”
The production team praised Augusta for its cinematic appeal and film-friendly environment. According to Screenwest CEO Rikki Lea Bestall, the town was “abuzz with activity” as local crews and cast collaborated on the project. Augusta’s natural beauty lends itself well to the mystery and suspense that permeate the series, serving as a haunting character in its own right.
SURROUNDING SOUTH WEST REGIONS
Additional filming took place throughout the South West, with select scenes captured in nearby areas known for their dramatic landscapes and coastal charm. These included locations along Caves Road, Flinders Bay, and parts of Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. These regions provide diverse visual settings—from dense forest trails to ocean-view cliffs—complementing the layered narrative of the season.
This strategic move to Western Australia also allowed the show to spotlight local talent and infrastructure. Stan Chief Content Officer Cailah Scobie highlighted that Scrublands: Silver was Stan’s fourth major project in WA within a year, underscoring a growing commitment to regional storytelling and industry collaboration.
PRODUCTION SUPPORT AND INVESTMENT
The production of Scrublands Season 2 was supported by Screenwest, Lotterywest, and the WA Regional Screen Fund. Their investment ensured that the story of Silver could be authentically brought to life with the help of Western Australian crews and creatives. The series is a co-production between Easy Tiger and Third Act Stories, with direction by WA’s own Ben Young (Hounds of Love).
Third Act Stories producer Martha Coleman expressed pride in bringing their first major production to WA, noting how well Augusta and the region suited the story’s tone. This collaboration between experienced production companies and local institutions made Western Australia not just a filming location, but a foundational part of the project’s identity.
