Resurrection Road Filming Locations: Where The Civil War Horror Movie Was Shot

-

People who watch RESURRECTION ROAD will be taken deep into the haunted forests of the American South, where war and the supernatural have twisted the world. Ashley Cahill directed and wrote this action-horror movie set during the Civil War. It tells the story of Barabbas (Malcolm Goodwin), a former slave who became a Union soldier, and is full of suspense, revenge, and history. Barabbas leads a group of six high-level Black soldiers on a dangerous mission into enemy territory. But where did this creepy journey really start? Let’s look at the creepy places where RESURRECTION ROAD was filmed.

ABOUT RESURRECTION ROAD

RESURRECTION ROAD takes place during the American Civil War and is mostly about Barabbas, who was wronged and marked by the people who used to own him as a slave. He is given one last chance to change his ways after years of service in the Union Army and a court-martial. He is given a deal: if he leads a group of Black soldiers to destroy strong Confederate weapons on a fort deep in the Arkansas wilderness, he will get his freedom, land, and a future. But no one who has been into those woods has ever come back.

The trip is very hard. It’s clear that the enemy is not just human when there are rumors of dark forces lurking in the night and bodies that have been cut up lying around in empty fields. Barabbas and his men have to fight their own fears, the ghosts of war, and a supernatural evil that wants to stop them.

WHERE WAS RESURRECTION ROAD FILMED?

RESURRECTION ROAD takes place in the scary backwoods of Arkansas, but it was all filmed in Oklahoma, which is known for its wide range of landscapes and tax breaks for filmmakers. Oklahoma’s thick forests and remote landscapes made for a perfect creepy setting for a movie that mixes scary and violent war scenes.

A lot of the scenes with trees were filmed in forest preserves close to the middle of Oklahoma. With their tall trees and foggy trails, these areas gave the impression of a remote wilderness controlled by the Confederacy. The unsettling quiet of the area added to the movie’s themes of being alone and doom.

Ohkay Film Studios: Fort Interior and Night Scenes

A big part of the movie’s set, the Confederate fort, was rebuilt on a studio lot in Oklahoma using both period props and real-life. Even though there were some lighting mistakes, most of the scenes inside the “fort” were filmed on these indoor sets, which gave the producers more control over the sound and lighting.

IS RESURRECTION ROAD WORTH WATCHING?

The premise of RESURRECTION ROAD is very interesting: a Black soldier leads a mission for revenge during one of America’s darkest times. There is something new about the genre when military action and supernatural horror are mixed together. Malcolm Goodwin gives a strong performance as Barabbas, and Michael Madsen and Randy Wayne bring grit and energy to the supporting cast.

However, the movie has problems with lighting, uneven cinematography, and antagonists who aren’t fully developed, even though it has good ideas and realistic gore effects. It often feels rushed because it’s only 77 minutes long. Still, fans of independent horror and thrillers set during the, Civil War might like how ambitious it is—especially since it was made on a very small budget.

Even though RESURRECTION ROAD doesn’t change the horror-war genre— the places where it was filmed in Oklahoma give it a very real feel and atmosphere. The woods are full of danger and the stark contrast between how beautiful nature is and how cruel people can be makes the story even scarier.
