Tetris Filming locations – Tetris is a biographical thriller movie with Taron Egerton, Nikita Efremov, Sofia Lebedeva, Anthony Boyle, Toby Jones, and Roger Allam in the lead roles. It was directed by Jon S. Baird and written by Noah Pink. In the late 1980s, during the Cold War, there was a race to get a patent for the popular video game Tetris. This biographical thriller tells the story of the people who were trying to get it.

The first time people saw Tetris was at the SXSW Film Festival on March 15, 2023. A week later, on March 31, 2023, it came out on Apple TV+. Although most critics liked the nostalgic mood and musical score, some were unhappy with Taron Egerton’s choice to play Willie Rogers.

The plot of the movie is based on the true story of Dutch-American businessman Henk Rogers, who in the late 1980s traveled the world to negotiate video game rights for consoles and handheld devices. Rogers gets interested in the Russian game designer Alexey Pajitnov’s Tetris while he is in Japan. He has to sign an unsettling contract that uses his home as collateral for a loan in order to get these rights, but he does get them in the end.

Rogers finally finds a prototype Game Boy that seems to already have Tetris on it. He goes to the Soviet Union to find the state-owned company that owns the rights to Tetris, but everyone he meets is rude and suspicious. Rogers ends up becoming friends with Alexey Pajitnov after being threatened and watched by the KGB.

Even though there were a lot of political problems between Russia and other countries, filming for the Tetris movie started in late 2021 and went on until early 2022. But because of the COVID-19 outbreak, filmmakers couldn’t film any scenes in Moscow. They had to find another place, like the real place where Tetris was filmed!

Where was the “Tetris” Movie Shot? Filming Locations

Filming of the Tetris movie took place in Scotland, specifically Glasgow and Aberdeen because they didn’t have permission to film in Russia. Director Jon S. Baird, who was born and raised in Aberdeen, chose to shoot here to show how good northern Scotland is for making movies.

One of the places used in the movie was the Zoology Building at the University of Aberdeen, which was the headquarters for the Russian company ELORG. Streets in Aberdeen, like Tillydrone Avenue, Seamount Court, and Gerrard Street, were also used to film scenes.

Crews camped out in different places in Glasgow to film some of the most important scenes from the movie, which takes place in Moscow in the 1980s. The movie’s hotel was actually an empty office building on Tradeston’s Morrison Street. Charlotte Street, Bothwell Street, Ayr Street, Old Dumbarton Road, and North Frederick Street were also used for filming.

Along with Glasgow and Aberdeen, the crew also filmed some scenes at the Glasgow Prestwick International Airport in Prestwick, which was dressed up in 1980s Soviet Russia style.

It’s interesting that a lot of the Kremlin scenes were shot in West Parliament Square, Edinburgh. In an interview for the production notes, producer Gillian Berrie said that many buildings in Moscow were planned and built by Scottish architects. Catherine the Great liked these architects so much that she brought some of Scotland’s best to build some famous landmarks.
